With Tegen het zwijgen,Hans Helsen (born 1989) completely contradicts the expression ‘Speech is silver, silence is golden’. The text of Jos Stroobants conveys new truths: ‘Schrijf ...dat kilte ons slechts haalt en ons vermaalt tot niets wanneer we zwijgen.’ (Write ... so that the cold only gets us and grinds us to nothing when we are silent). As such, Helsen gets his female choir to sing almost continuously, with the exception of a few accurately placed resting moments. An evolving recurring motif through the various voices gives structure and credibility to composition and text content. Beautiful and interesting composition for women's choir.
Paul Schollaert turned 80 in 2020. He wrote Lied aan de Zee from the Ensorcantata in July 1984 on the occasion of the annual music week in Ronse with the Ostend choirs Muzeschuit (children's choir), Camerata Ostendia (like-minded women's choir) and Ter Duinenkantorij (mixed choir of mainly parents of the children and young people from the two other groups).
In 2019, Dubois wrote two arrangements for SATB a cappella of Ik zag Cecilia komen, created by the Geels Vocaal Ensemble conducted by Eva Vermeren during their concert trip to Barcelona. Dubois alternates canonical bits between single voices with full four voices. A short piece with melodic lines and surprising harmony.
A tasteful simple three-part setting of one of the 150 Souterliedekens.
Here you can find the original Dutch version of Fruit salad for the choir in Dutch: Fruitsla voor het koor
Marcel Ponseele (°1957) came second in the category music schools with De Grens (the border), inspired by the Ukrainian-Russian conflict. Ponseele is a renowned oboist and oboe builder. We know him from his wonderful ensemble Il Gardellino. As a young pensioner, he now focuses on composing. A nice surprise.
This is perhaps Waelrant's best-known work. It is very popular with choirs in Flanders and the Netherlands.
